It's perplexing how one can harbor hatred towards a stranger. Is it simply because they are different? Our differences are what make us unique – our cultures, our beliefs, our lives. Why can't we embrace these differences and coexist peacefully? Why is Understanding Hate and Empathy: An Incomprehensible Sentiment, so hard for people to understand.
Take immigrants, for example. Many seek a better life for their families, escaping dire circumstances. "Enter legally," some say, but do they understand the hardships faced by those living in poverty? Poverty is not just a distant issue; it's prevalent, even in the United States. Can we truly comprehend the struggles of those less fortunate? It's easy to feel superior when we've never experienced such adversity. Meanwhile, the traditional gender roles perpetuate cycles of dependence, contributing to the reliance on food assistance programs. The immense costs of relocating an entire family to another country can be overwhelming.
Having been born in the 60s, I witnessed firsthand the challenges my family faced. My father worked tirelessly on the farm, earning little, until he found a factory job. We lived in homes without plumbing or running water, wore hand-me-downs, and ate what was available. Despite the hardships, we never went hungry, thanks to my father's hunting skills. These experiences shape my empathy for those seeking a better life. My husband and I have worked diligently to provide for our children and grandchildren, knowing the struggles they may face. Yet, the worry for their future persists.
Let us reflect on these shared human experiences and work towards a future where understanding and compassion prevail over hatred and division.
